Schneeberg
Schneeberg, the "Queen of the Vienna Alps," is the highest mountain range in Lower Austria. This mountain, rising to two thousand meters, can be explored on foot, by train, cable car, or even by bicycle, and the experience is sure to be unforgettable.
Located just an hour's drive from Sopron, Schneeberg is a true alpine peak with a distinctive shape. It's a paradise for skiers and hikers alike, all accompanied by breathtaking panoramas.
While here, don't miss the narrow-gauge railway, which takes visitors up to 1800 meters above sea level, promising gentle meadows, fragrant coniferous forests, and unforgettable views.
In Puchberg, there's also a lovely little museum worth visiting: the Schneeberg Museum (Burggasse 9.a), where you can glimpse into the region's past and the culture of the mountain world.
From the plethora of Schneeberg hiking opportunities, many choose the Sebastian-Wasserfall, or the nearby Sebastian Waterfall hike.
If you're a fan of winter sports, we recommend the Loserheim ski slope, which is one of the closest skiing options to the Austrian capital. While the ski area is not too large, it is unique in the region as (part of it) can be used all year round, as some of the lower beginner slopes have plastic covering.
