Savaria Museum
Opened in 1908 in the Kultúrpalota, the Savaria Museum houses approximately half a million objects, serving both museum and library functions. Its archaeological collections include prehistoric sites near Sé, the Celtic fort at Velem, and artifacts from ancient Savaria. The museum also preserves Central Europe’s largest Pannonian fossil plant collection, as well as extensive botanical, entomological, and mollusk collections.
Exhibitions cover local history from the 17th century guilds to the Dual Monarchy and modern eras. The upper floors feature “Changing Cultures in a Changing Landscape,” presenting geology and archaeology of Western Hungary. The Roman Room illustrates daily life in ancient Savaria with interactive tools. Other rooms display migration-era and medieval artifacts, including Hun, Germanic, Avar, and Hungarian legacies. The basement lapidarium exhibits Roman stone monuments. Temporary exhibitions and events are regularly held.
