Bishop’s Palace
The Szombathelyi Püspöki Palota, one of Hungary’s finest Late Baroque buildings, was commissioned by Bishop János Szily. Construction began in 1778 and was completed in 1783. The palace served as both the bishop’s residence and the diocesan administrative center.
The upper floors include representative halls: the Grand Hall, the Yellow Salon, and the Saint Paul Room, richly decorated with frescoes and oil paintings. The northern wing houses the bishop’s private chapel with alabaster altar, throne, and Baroque–Rococo liturgical objects. The Sala Terrena on the ground floor contains Hungary’s first archaeological collection, with Roman stones and inscriptions collected by Bishop Szily, highlighting Savaria’s Roman heritage. The palace remains a cultural, historical, and artistic center.
