Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Cathedral

Szombathely

The cathedral, the main church of the Diocese of Szombathely, houses the bishop’s cathedra. Located at Mindszenty József Square, it is a major city landmark, often called the “Great Church” by locals. Construction began in the late 18th century under Bishop János Szily. The foundation stone was laid in 1791, and the cathedral was completed by 1797 in a Classicizing Baroque style.

The building has a Latin cross plan, forming a unified architectural ensemble with the Bishop’s Palace and former seminary. Roman-era remains were preserved during construction. The façade features two towers and ornate columns, and the interior contains rich artworks. It is Hungary’s third-largest church, accommodating up to 5,000 people. Damaged during WWII, it was restored and reconsecrated by József Mindszenty in 1947.
